About Hanukkah

Hanukkah is an eight day celebration which falls this year on December 25, 2024 - January 2, 2025. This year's One Love, One Light Hanukkah Concert in Negril represents a coming together of community, music, and the spirit of resilience in a spectacular Caribbean setting.

Jewish Historical Roots of Hanukkah

This quintessential Jewish holiday commemorates a historic triumph from 165 BCE, when Jewish Maccabees reclaimed the Holy Temple. Against seemingly impossible odds, the Maccabees defeated the Syrian-Greek armies, reclaiming Jerusalem and rededicating the Holy Temple. This victory wasn't just a military triumph, but a profound spiritual moment of Jewish survival and religious freedom. In 2024, this powerful Jewish story of resilience resonates globally—especially in unexpected places like Jamaica.

The Miracle of the Oil

Upon reclaiming the Temple, the Maccabees discovered only a single day's worth of pure olive oil needed to light the Temple's menorah (the sacred seven-branched candelabrum). The oil was crucial for maintaining the eternal light that symbolized God's presence.
Miraculously, this small amount of oil burned for eight full days—the exact time needed to prepare new, ritually pure oil. This event transformed what could have been a mundane moment into a supernatural demonstration of divine providence.

Hanukkah's Universal Message

Beyond its historical origins, Hanukkah represents hope in the face of adversity. It reminds us that:

  • Small acts of courage can create significant change
  • Spiritual light can overcome darkness
  • Community and faith can triumph over oppression
